Folks who grew up in Austin or attended UT back in the middle 20th Century fondly remember the 1886 restaurant in the grand Driskill Hotel, which was managed and tended by the Daughters of the Texas Revolution who also cooked or collected much of the food. Thankfully when the Driskill underwent its recent complete renovation the 1886 Café was put back in its rightful place off the lobby on 6th Street and is being watched over by acclaimed chef David Bull (more famous for 1886's more formal sister The Driskill Grill).. Diners can choose to eat in the restaurant, out in the lobby on beautifully  restored marble floors amid columns, or on an outside patio overlooking 6th. The inside portion doubles as a world class bakery in which breads, cakes, pies, cookies and special goodies abound. The main menu includes an ample selection of soups, salads, burgers and sandwiches, and small selection of prepared main dishes like meatloaf. Just remember to save some room because the sweets are always  the stars of the show.
