To compete with hundreds of Mexican, Tex-Mex and other Latin restaurants in Central Texas, Abuelo's opted to build a large, elaborate, white linens on the table, convenient stand alone eatery across the street from Barton Square Mall. Diners can't help but enjoy the interior decor, with everything from stained concrete floors to portraits of celebrities; and the huge size is broken up into rooms for large parties, intimate nooks for twosomes and small groups, and a nice full service bar with seating. The food is traditional Tex-Mex, featuring enchiladas, tacos, a variety of appetizers, soups and salads, and disarmingly good seafood and meat entrees. One tasty and innovative choice is the pescado guerrero, Mahi Mahi topped with shrimp, scallops and avocado. The service is friendly and helpful, the portions are very generous and when you leave the restaurant you can enjoy a dynamic view of downtown Austin from the parking lot.
