FoodHawk Review:
You would assume that a restaurant that has been successful for more than 30 years has a pretty loyal following, but it's still a shock to see the crowds that regularly find their way to Amaya's Taco
Village, an unassuming Tex-Mex eatery tucked in a corner of Capital Plaza on IH-35 North, near 51st Street. On a recent Saturday breakfast visit every table was taken, with additional hungry diners w
aiting their turn. The crowd was very local, neighborhood, and family oriented, and the decor featured UT orange and unique table tops that advertised area businesses. David and Laura Amaya took ove
r management of the restaurant five years ago from David's parents, and the Amaya tradition of tasty food, reasonable prices, and efficient service is in good hands. The menu is basic Tex-Mex, revolving around some of the best and most authentic tacos in Austin. The guacamole salad is wonderful, and the "small" size would be large anywhere else. The "plates" include a great selection of fajitas, carne guisada, chalupas, enchiladas, and fish and beef tacos. And every dish can be complemented by a huge variety of sides, including some of the best charro beans east of the interstate. Breakfast, served every morning beginning at 7 a.m., includes traditional migas and huevos con rancheros, chorizo or machacado. It's a bit of a trick finding Amaya's but it's well worth the effort.
