FoodHawk Review:
What's been missing in the Austin dining scene is an authentic Greek restaurant. One that combines generations-old recipes developed and enhanced by serious Northern Greek cooks with an Austin Greek
family that wants to share their secrets with area diners. That restaurant has arrived: El Greco, on Guadalupe near Wheatsville Co-op. Sous Chef Jake Konstantinidis has the vision of introducing Aus
tinites to the cuisine of his grandmother and her friends, and his mom and aunt keep their eyes and palates peeled to guarantee authenticity. You must give this restaurant a try…either eat it in or
take it out. Yes, they have gyros and kebabs…and great ones at that…but from the breakfast pockets straight through to some of the best desserts in Austin this is Greek food at its very best.  The spreads and dips are spectacular, with Tzatsiki (yogurt cucumber sauce), eggplant dip, hummus, tabouli, tarama and more. More than a dozen traditional and American salads, soups and appetizers will tempt, including Jake's potato salad, tiropita (cheese pie), spanakopita (spinach pie), and feta stuffed piquant peppers. But save room for grilled entrees like the char grilled lamb chops plate;  pastas like pastitsio, penne gorgonzola, and Greek linguini Alfredo; and traditional entrees like moussaka and stuffed zucchini. Did I mention dessert? Hold some serious space for the baklava, galaktoboureko (Greek baked custard), ekmek Kataifi, and my favorite, Greek honey cookies. You can pair any meal with authentic Greek beers and wine. So come without delay and let Chef Jake and his family introduce you to the wonderful tastes and smells of Northern Greece.
