Not long after World War II a hamburger stand called Dunks opened on Barton Springs, nearly a half century before the road became a Main Street in the bustling and eclectic South Austin restaurant and  shopping scene. It became Jerry Jacobs Pit Barbecue System in the early '50s and finally hung up The Green Mesquite BBQ & More sign in 1988. The restaurant still welcomes patrons from the '40s to current and prides itself on being able to remember people's names and histories. Now a second store has opened in Oak Hill to please the growing West Austin and Hill Country crowd. The food is as advertised: mesquite smoked wings, chili cheese fries, burgers, po-boys, steamin' chili, Idaho "bakers," chicken fried steak, a little Cajun and Tex-Mex. But bar-b-q is the big draw, with choices of plates  and sides featuring brisket, pork ribs, pork loin, and smoked chicken, sausage, turkey and ham. Kids are welcome, and have a variety of options including grilled cheese and chicken tenders.
