If history means anything-and in Austin it means everything!-Scholz Garten has more of it than just about any food joint in town. It was founded at the end of the Civil War by August Scholz, a Confederate vet, and has grown up with the city. In fact, in a city that calls itself the "Live Music Capitol of the World," it reassuring to know that Scholz's has been featuring good German music since 1871. The food is comfort by design, with sandwiches, burgers, fries and the like, and it's a tradition that everyone who grows up in Austin, attends the universities, or spends much time at all here must experience the Beer Garten. Did we say beer? Whether you're out for a "sports bar" kind of evening, entertaining out of towners looking for authentic Austin, or looking for that special place to celebrate UT victories, beer at the Garten is the most authentic place you can find. Hook 'em.
